WHAT ARE WORDS?

Any single element of speech that makes meaning is called a word. You can hear spoken words in languages, and read written words on papers and boards. Words are the elements of language that we can string together to make a sentence.

There are different definitions of the term ‘word’ in the dictionary. Sometimes it is defined relative to language – features of writing and spoken language.

WHAT WORDS LOOK LIKE

Words come in different languages and characters. That you do not speak a given language does not void the fact that there are words in that language. People learn new vocabulary every day and strive to improve their abilities to string words in colourful ways. Regardless of the language you speak, you want to speak up. You want your voice heard, you want to be understood, and you want to write fluently. You wish to belong.

Do you want to learn a new language?

The top five most spoken languages of the world ranking from the most spoken languages to the least spoken language are Chinese, Spanish, English, Hindi, and Arabic. This ranking is on the total number of native speakers only (Babble Magazine). However, this ranking changes when you go by the total number of people that speak a given language. English comes then followed by Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Spanish, and then French.
