Flame On The Bird’s Tail

by Chinyere Nwosu

It’s one of those stories you have heard before,

Many people gather but none can help.

It’s one of those times you watch from a distance,

Your heart is sore, but your hands are tied.

Your mouth is agape, but no scream is heard,

Many families in sorrow, you pray for comfort.

It’s one of those stories you have heard before,

The flames have risen high, the smoke is rising.

The loud thud was heard from afar,

It’s one of those stories you have heard before.

They could not get closer until it was late,

The fire burnt all within, the sight is grave.

A sad event clothed in a heroic tunic despite

Fighting till the end to save as many in his path;

Raise your hats and bid the hero farewell.

It’s one of those stories you have heard before.

About The Poem

There was a plane crash today, February 21, 2021, in Abuja Nigeria, all 7 onboard confirmed dead. A military aircraft, King Air 350 crashed as it approached the runway. Eyewitness report says that the aircraft could have crashed into a residential area, however, the pilot maneuvered into a free bush. This is a reminder of how much some give in service to humanity. The pilot knew he and the others onboard may be meeting their end, still, he flew to save people who may be caught in the disaster along the way.
