THERE ARE COLOURS AROUND US

We see colours everywhere – in natural and artificial materials. We love to have colours around us as they make things come alive, lending a tone, character, and life that appeal to us in different ways. We are consistently attracted to colours that are bright and alive and tend to withdraw from the muted because we think they are dull and lifeless. Colours have the power to make us happy, sad, relaxed, or anxious. The effects stem from the psychological prints that colours make on us, their cultural connotations, and biological conditioning.

These effects are a part of the theories in psychology and colour theory. However, we have summarized some salient points in this article.

Colours and what they mean

 

GROUPING COLOURS

First off, let us group colours based on temperature and tone.

Based on temperature, a colour can either be warm or cool.

Grouping colours by temperature

Warm colours

  1. Red
  2. Yellow
  3. Orange

Cool colours

  1. Green
  2. Blue
  3. Purple

Warm colours are associated with happiness, energy, and optimism. They are known to grab attention and signal danger.

Cool colours evoke calmness, sadness, and creativity. They are also known to depict health, beauty, and security.

Grouping colours by tone

Based on the tone, colours can be bright and dark.

Bright colours

  1. Red
  2. Yellow
  3. Orange
  4. Pink
  5. Lilac
  6. Peach
  7. Turquoise
  8. Emerald green

Dark colours

  1. Green
  2. Blue
  3. Purple
  4. Brown
  5. Black
  6. White

Bright colours are happy.

Dark colours are sad.

White and black depict mourning in different cultures.
