By The Cross

by Chinyere Nwosu

Looking up at the cross

Standing by the foot of the tree,

I see the Saviour

Hanging there in pain.

Looking up at the cross

Standing by the foot of the tree,

His blood flowed down

Unto us ward, streaming with his life.

Looking up at the cross

Standing by the foot of the tree,

The echo of his ridicule

sounded a loud alarm afresh.

It can only be for the best,

for things I may not yet see;

He labored and carried the weight all the way

Naked, with tall nails and a thorny crown.

Looking up at the cross

Standing by the foot of the tree,

I felt some peace knowing his words

“It is finished”, he said at the end.

Looking up at the cross

Standing by the foot of the tree,

My heart was made up;

I could try the faith; I will live for his love.
